design philosophy
Design is a field that has its own visual traditions, business cultures, and technical methedologies. Surprising results emerge when the graphic designer takes the lead in artistic practice. There is no strict formula for invention. The path to innovation is paved with passion and confidence, and the courage to move forward into unknown, untraveled territory. By placing a premium on exquisite design the designer’s esthetic sense transcends into an immersive practice where art, architecture, technology, science, society, etc. collide; this innovation is the sustainable system of the designer.
While immersive design at its root describes a more specific methodology in video game design I use it to more wholly describe the practice of the avant-guard designer. Certain trends must exist in order for an immersive practice to take place. The first is, there must be an unmediated network of information. Second, that network must function globally. Third, the network must be accepted on a base social level. With these functions in place the educated designer can navigate seamlessly as an informed innovator in and out of varying professional landscapes.
This immersive practice can stifle even the most patient of designers. I have found that Albert Einstein’s maxim, “everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler,” is the method I need to focus on in my own design. I find a simplified approach ultimately produces sophistication. While the principle of immersion defines my practice as a designer, the polarity of immersion and simplification aim for a more pragmatic outcome in the design work itself.
The design on a more tangible level should work operatively. It is a pattern with a purpose. It should be digestible and accessible. It should be pointed and relevant to the problem it solves. It is an aesthetic statement while also carrying a function of fact.
I have built a career by challenging the transience of this innovation. As a creator in the fine arts I investigate the hybrid object, toying with both the formal and ideological traditions of the art world. As a designer I invent within the global landscape to create simple, sophisticated, pointed results.
